Attacks on Muslim women wearing hijab have risen in Britain since Boris Johnson made a remark comparing them to letterbox.
Some of the watchdog, which records hate crimes in Britain found that there is a link between his latest remark and the attacks.
Hijab, niqab or veil are a form of a garment which covers Muslim women hair and face.
There are reports of 5-1 Muslim women being called 'Letterboxes" since then.
One of the recent reports is an attack on a train in London. A woman is attacked while on the train.
“Over the weekend, I went on a trip with a group of women, and a male passenger allowed us to board the train first,” she wrote in The Independent.
“One of the women was wearing a niqab, and she was the last one to get on the train. The man laughed and said: ‘Hold on, you forgot the letterbox.’
Attacks on Muslim women are rising, and this must be stopped. Internet should be able to shorten the gap of understanding between different religions and cultures.
However, one thing to note as a Muslim it is good always to remind ourselves to respect others before we gain the respect we need. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, showed this throughout his life.
Qays ibn Sa’d reported: A funeral passed by the Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, and he stood up. It was said to him, “It is a Jew.” The Prophet said, “Was he not a soul?”
Therefore, let's start it with ourselves before we want others to change. Let us be the agent of change my hijab loving Singaporean :)
